A battery load tester applies a substantial electrical load and checks how well battery voltage holds under that demand. A conductance tester uses a small signal to estimate available cranking performance without a traditional high-current load. Why Can Load and Conductance Results Disagree?

The two methods do not measure the battery in the same way, so a borderline battery can produce different verdicts. Before assuming one tester is wrong, control the setup:

  • Wrong rating entry: entering SAE CCA when the label shows EN, DIN, IEC, JIS, or another standard can change the comparison.

How to Get a More Reliable Conductance Test

Identify the battery

Read the label and select the correct voltage, battery construction, rating standard, and printed rated value. Do not guess CCA from battery size.

Inspect before connecting

Stop if the case is damaged or unsafe. Check that terminals and clamps are clean enough for solid metal-to-metal contact.

Connect with correct polarity

Red to positive and black to negative, using the connection points prescribed for the vehicle. Move the clamps if the tool reports poor contact.
