Most modern conductance testers turn a short electrical measurement into several displayed values and a plain-language condition result. The fastest way to understand the screen is to give each value one job:

Voltage: Useful, but Not a Health Verdict
Resting voltage is mainly a state-of-charge clue. It cannot prove that a battery can supply the high current needed by a starter. Plausible open-circuit voltage can coexist with poor performance under load.

SOC: How Charged Is the Battery Right Now?
SOC is short for State of Charge. Think of it as the battery's current fuel gauge. A low SOC can result from short trips, a light left on, extended storage, a charging-system problem or an unwanted electrical draw. It does not automatically mean the battery is worn out.
That distinction matters because a discharged but serviceable battery may look weak until it is charged correctly and retested. SOC should therefore influence whether the test is ready to support a final health decision.
SOH: An Estimate of Longer-Term Condition
SOH means State of Health. It describes the battery's longer-term ability to store and deliver energy compared with its reference condition. It is not a countdown of months remaining, and an SOH percentage should not be presented as an exact prediction of failure.
Battery manufacturers note that reliable health assessment is more complex than reading voltage. Depending on the test system, cold-start capability, residual capacity and charge acceptance may contribute to the judgment. A handheld tester's SOH is therefore an algorithm-based estimate that should be read with CCA, resistance, symptoms and the final test decision.
Rated CCA vs. Measured CCA
Cold Cranking Amps, or CCA, is a standardized starting-power rating. For a conventional 12-volt battery, the commonly cited rating condition is the current a new, fully charged battery can deliver for 30 seconds at 0°F (about −18°C) while maintaining at least 7.2 volts.
The CCA on the battery label is the reference rating. The measured CCA shown by a compact conductance tester is an estimate derived from the battery's electrical response; the tool is not making the battery deliver the entire displayed current through its small clamps. Compare the result with the correct label rating, but also respect the tester's recommendation and the vehicle manufacturer's battery requirements. Do not treat one percentage cutoff as universal.
Internal Resistance: Context Matters More Than One Number
Internal resistance opposes current flow inside the battery. As resistance increases, more voltage can be lost internally when the starter demands current. That can contribute to slow cranking even when resting voltage appears acceptable.
Lower resistance is generally favorable, but there is no single milliohm limit that applies to every automotive battery. Battery construction, size, chemistry, manufacturer, temperature, charge state and measurement method all matter. Compare the reading with the tester's overall result, measured versus rated CCA and—when available—earlier readings from the same battery. Avoid internet charts that declare every battery above one fixed resistance value bad.
Before You Trust the Test Result
A correct-looking screen can still be based on incorrect inputs or poor contact. Establish reliable conditions before making a replacement decision.
Do not charge or test a visibly cracked, leaking, swollen, frozen or otherwise unsafe battery. Follow the battery and vehicle manufacturers' safety instructions.
Identify battery voltage, construction and the printed rating. CCA, CA, MCA, EN, DIN, IEC and JIS are not interchangeable labels.
Select the actual battery type and enter the exact rating and standard only when the tester supports and requests them. Do not guess missing information.
Loose clamps, corrosion and testing at remote jump posts can add resistance or create unstable readings. Follow the tester's connection instructions.
Unless the tester directs otherwise, switch off the engine and accessories. A charger, active vehicle electronics or other electrical noise can disturb a test.
Surface charge and extreme temperature can skew a borderline result. Let the battery stabilize or use the tester's prescribed surface-charge procedure.

What Common Battery Tester Messages Mean
Exact wording varies by brand and model, so the tester's manual remains the authority. These are common meanings rather than a promise that every tester uses the same messages.
- Good Battery: the battery meets the tester's current acceptance criteria.
- Good—Recharge: the battery passes the health judgment but is not adequately charged.
- Charge & Retest: the tester is deferring a final health decision until the battery is properly charged and tested again.
- Replace Battery: the battery failed the tester's criteria. Check settings and connections and follow the model-specific instructions before replacement.
- Bad Cell—Replace: follow the tester and battery manufacturers' safety directions; some professional manuals specifically warn against charging a battery identified as having a bad cell.

When to Charge and Retest
A charge-and-retest instruction is not the same as “bad battery.” It means the current charge state does not support a decisive health judgment. Charging before retesting separates a temporary lack of charge from a battery that can no longer deliver or retain useful performance.
Stop if the case is damaged, leaking, swollen or frozen, or if the tester gives a safety-related failure message.
Match the charger to the battery chemistry and follow its manufacturer's procedure rather than improvising a voltage or time.
After charging, follow the tester's instructions for rest time or surface-charge removal. Reconnect directly and securely.
If the battery still tests weak, investigate battery deterioration and verify that the vehicle's charging system is not causing the problem.
Do not replace a battery from one unexplained number. Wrong chemistry, the wrong label rating, cold temperature, a discharged battery or dirty terminals can all change a result. Conversely, do not ignore persistent slow cranking simply because resting voltage looks normal.
What a Battery Tester Cannot Tell You by Itself
A battery result is only one part of a starting complaint. It cannot prove why the battery became discharged. A faulty charging system, excessive key-off draw, loose ground, corroded cable or starter problem can produce similar symptoms.
Conductance-based CCA and SOH estimates also do not replace every laboratory capacity or load test. When the displayed verdict conflicts with vehicle behavior, repeat the test under controlled conditions and continue diagnosis instead of forcing the numbers to fit a conclusion.
