P0420 means Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold, Bank 1. The engine computer has detected catalyst performance outside its expected range. Start by saving the codes and freeze frame, checking related engine faults and inspecting the exhaust for leaks. The code alone is not a complete converter diagnosis.
A replacement catalytic converter is a major purchase. Before approving it, you want to know what failed, which tests support the repair and whether an engine problem could damage the replacement. This guide helps you build that evidence in a useful order.
What P0420 tells you—and what Bank 1 means
The catalytic converter treats exhaust gases after combustion. The engine computer evaluates its performance under particular operating conditions, using sensor information and a programmed monitoring strategy. P0420 records a failed efficiency evaluation; it is different from a monitor that has simply not completed.
Bank 1 is the side of the engine containing cylinder 1. An inline engine generally has one bank. On an engine with two banks, identify the correct side from service information before ordering parts. P0430 concerns Bank 2; the two codes do not identify the same converter on every exhaust layout.
A steady light with normal operation calls for timely diagnosis. A flashing light, strong shaking, overheating, major power loss or a hot burning smell changes the priority: pull over safely and arrange assistance. Do not continue a diagnostic drive with serious symptoms.
A useful order for the first checks
1. Save the evidence before clearing anything
Record every code and its status, not just P0420. Save the available freeze frame, mileage and the conditions when the light appeared. Write down recent exhaust work, misfires, oil consumption or sensor replacement. Clearing first can remove the snapshot that helps explain why the monitor failed.
2. Investigate related engine and sensor faults
Misfire, fuel-mixture and oxygen-sensor circuit faults can affect the exhaust entering the converter or the information used to evaluate it. Follow the applicable diagnostic procedure for those faults before treating the converter as the only problem. 3. Inspect the exhaust and recent work
With the engine off and exhaust cool, look for loose connections, damaged wiring, soot around joints and obvious damage near the sensors or converter. A leak check by a workshop can find faults that a visual inspection misses. Exhaust leaks can affect sensor information; inspection matters even when the car sounds normal.
4. Check the vehicle-specific diagnostic information
Look up service bulletins, the correct sensor layout and the prescribed catalyst test for the exact engine. Ask whether the installed converter matches the application. A sensor part number, connector fit or generic scan-tool label is not enough to establish that the part is correct.
How to use oxygen-sensor data without guessing

On some conventional narrowband systems, a rear sensor closely following the front sensor under the prescribed test conditions can support further catalyst testing. It is not a universal pass/fail rule. Wideband air-fuel sensors may report current, lambda or other values instead of the familiar switching voltage.
Do not apply one internet voltage chart to every vehicle. A single idle screenshot can miss the condition that set the code. A technician may need a manufacturer-defined oxygen-storage test, supported onboard test results or exhaust-gas analysis to reach a firm conclusion.

Before you approve a converter replacement
Ask for the test result that supports replacement, the location of the affected converter and an explanation of any contributing engine fault. If the engine consumes oil or coolant, include that in the repair plan. Otherwise, the condition that harmed the original converter may remain.
There is no responsible universal repair price for P0420. The bill depends on the actual fault, exhaust layout, parts required and local labor. Request separate lines for diagnosis, the confirmed repair and verification. Avoid buying a converter or oxygen sensor solely because its name appears in a code description.
What to check after the repair
Save the original scan, complete the confirmed repair and follow the specified clearing and verification procedure. Recheck for returning stored or pending faults and confirm that the relevant monitor has completed. An immediately dark warning light only tells you the light is off at that moment.
