An ABS light with no engine codes often means you have not scanned the ABS module. First confirm that your tool supports ABS diagnostics for your exact vehicle, then open that system and save its results. “No engine codes,” “no ABS codes” and “cannot communicate with ABS” are three different findings.
It is easy to plug in a reader, see a clear result and assume the warning has no explanation. Before buying a wheel-speed sensor or trying a reset, identify exactly what the scanner checked. Innova’s ABS guidance explains why a basic engine-code reader may not retrieve brake-system faults.
Check braking safety first. If braking feels abnormal, a red brake warning is also on, or the owner’s manual tells you to stop, pull over safely and arrange assistance. A clear engine scan is not evidence that the brakes are safe. Do not deliberately trigger ABS to test the warning.

Save a screenshot that includes the module name. An isolated “0 codes” image leaves out the most useful detail. Also distinguish a completed scan from a progress screen, an empty menu or a connection error.

Confirm the Vehicle and Module Before Repeating the Scan

If automatic identification selects the wrong variant, follow the tool’s supported manual-selection process. Do not choose a similar model merely because it opens a menu. A coverage statement for a brand is less useful than confirmation for the actual vehicle and function.
If communication fails, record whether the engine and other modules are accessible. Give support the scanner model, app/software version, vehicle details and exact message. This makes a coverage question easier to separate from a vehicle connection problem. It does not establish that the ABS control unit needs replacement.
Build a Short Record Before Clearing Anything
Use the following checklist to make the next scan or workshop visit more productive. Keep observations factual: “lamp appeared after the wheel bearing was replaced” is useful; “the new bearing caused it” is still a conclusion to test.

Photograph the warning while parked. Save the original report before a repair or reset changes the evidence. If a shop later finds an intermittent fault, your timeline may help explain why a stationary scan did not reproduce it.
A Wheel-Speed Code Is a Starting Point
A fault naming one wheel does not, by itself, prove that the sensor electronics failed. The diagnostic path can include wiring, connectors, sensor installation and the signal-generating ring or encoder. Where the vehicle and tool support individual wheel-speed data, a technician can compare signals under controlled conditions. A repeated dropout at one corner helps direct inspection, but a normal stationary reading cannot prove that the signal remains correct while moving. Signal differences also need context; wheel speeds need not match in every driving situation.
Do not watch a phone while driving or run raised wheels on improvised supports. Arrange a safe recording method or professional test. The final check should confirm the repaired system’s operation and rescan for returning faults, rather than relying only on an extinguished lamp.
Choose ABS Coverage, Not Just a Reset Button
Ask whether the tool can identify the ABS module, read its fault details and display the data required for your diagnosis. ABS bleeding, coding and other service operations are separate capabilities. Their presence in a product menu does not answer the basic coverage question.
ABS Light and Scanner Questions
Can a cheap OBD2 reader explain an ABS light?
Only if it supports the relevant ABS system on your vehicle. Engine-code reading alone is insufficient. Check the model-specific coverage rather than judging solely by price.
Can I drive with only the ABS light on?
Follow your vehicle’s owner’s manual. An ABS fault may affect anti-lock operation even when conventional braking remains available. Abnormal braking or additional brake warnings require urgent attention; do not use a generic online answer as clearance to drive.
Will disconnecting the battery fix the warning?
Do not use battery disconnection as a diagnostic shortcut. It does not identify the cause and may change stored information. Preserve the scan result and follow the prescribed repair and verification process.
What if a compatible scanner still finds no ABS codes?
Keep the identified module, completed scan result and warning photograph together. Ask for diagnosis of the persistent warning and related systems. Do not turn a no-code result into an automatic sensor or module replacement.
The next useful step is a verified ABS scan. Confirm what was accessed, preserve the evidence and let the result guide the repair.
