U0403 — Invalid Data Received from Transfer Case Control Module
The Transfer Case Control Module is present on the data bus but the values it reports are implausible — out of range, frozen, or failing the checksum or rolling-count check. The receiving modules reject the data. Four-wheel-drive control becomes unreliable. Causes include a faulty sensor feeding the module, internal computation errors, a software or calibration mismatch after a repair, or bus interference corrupting the frames.
General code reference. Confirm the definition and diagnostic procedure for your vehicle's year, model and engine. A stored code alone does not identify a failed part.
Affected components
- Transfer case control module
- Can bus wiring
Possible causes to check
These are possible checks, not a ranked diagnosis. Follow the vehicle manufacturer's test procedure before replacing parts.
- Transfer case internal sensor or processing fault
- CAN corruption causing checksum errors
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
Possible symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
Diagnostic notes
- The malfunction indicator lamp may illuminate
